caducidad de las sesiones

En mi página web uso un sistema de usuarios hecho por mi, es decir, chapucero. El tema es que en la página login.php donde recoge el usuario y el password y verifica que sean correctos, registro la variable usuario, para que se acuerde durante la estancia en la página, y luego paso a la página principal.php, donde está la mayor parte del tiempo. El tema es que al cabo de un rato, digamos que se olvida del password, y el campo usuarios e queda vacío. Porqué me caduca la session? Le he puesto el setcookieparams con un valor muy alto pero sigue caducando. Porque?

Yo también he tenido un problema parecido al tuyo y la verdad es que desistí de usar sesiones en PHP. Si quieres que no se olvide del password haz tu la comprobación de este mediante un if.

La verdad es qu puede ser por muchas cosas, y espero que sepas ingles, jejeje, bueno empieza por comprobar la variable:
session.gc_maxlifetime = 1440
session.cache_expire = 180

del php.ini del servidor en el que trabajas, y si eso no funciona, pues revisa todas las demas variables del php.ini con respecto a sesiones. A mi me duran bastante y esta es la configuración que uso:
